"As it is written,'Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.'"
- 2 Corinthians 8:15 -
When God gives us blessings, He didn't give them to us just for us to enjoy. We often hear Christians say they are blessed richly... But too often they don't realize that those blessings are to be shared with others.
""Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.""
- Proverbs 11:22 -
If a girl or a woman doesn't use good sense when it comes to her God-given beauty, she's wasting it. Her beauty is about as worthless as a gold ring on a pig as it roots around in the dirt and mud.
"Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men."
- 1 Corinthians 14:20 -
This verse, and another one similar to it, Matthew 10:16, teaches us to be "wise as serpents" or "men in understanding", but "in malice be children" or to be "harmless as doves". There are many who are well-practiced in the art of causing harm and showing ill-will and hatred toward those they don't like. We need to be fully aware of this evil, yet not participate in it, and not return it in kind.
"For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes."
- I Corinthians 11:26 -
How often do we really think and consider the "till he comes" part of this verse? The early Christians were extremely focused on the second coming of Christ, & to a certain extent we are more "well-rounded" in our understanding, by seeing that it's been 200 years, & Jesus still hasn't returned. But because we know & see that, we tend to push off the second coming till after we're gone, & that is an extrememly dangerous way of thinking & of living. May God help us look forward to His return!
"...that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you..."
- I Thessalonians 4:11 -
It's interesting that Paul says the Christian's ambition should be to live quietly and mind our own business and work with our hands. This is just so opposite of what the world around us thinks that we should be doing. When we think of someone who is ambitious, we normally think of someone running for a political office or doing something very bold (presidents, generals, etc.) but the Christian's aspiration should be to live quietly, mind their own business and work with their own hands.
"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
- Romans 8:38-39 -
It is amazing that all of these powerful forces cannot break the bond between man and God's love, but man himself has the power to separate himself.
"The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness"
- Romans 1:18 -
One of the greatest faults of human beings is to "know better" but still do what is ungodly and unrighteous (not right). Knowing the truth often is not the problem - suppressing it, in order to do wrong so often is.
"Whoso causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way, he shall fall himself into his own pit: but the upright shall have good things in possession."
- Proverbs 28:10 -
Ultimately, those who practice what is against God's stated law, and lead others to do the same, shall be destroyed by God, but those who do what is right will be blessed by God. It is impossible to willfully do wrong and expect God to be with you.
"Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil."
- Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 -
When I observe people debating the meaning of life or even the origin of life, I always think back to this powerful passage that reminds us all why we are here!
