And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God… – Romans 8:28
This Passage is held by many Christians to be one of the most comforting Passages in the Bible. After all, no matter what we face, no matter how hard it is, no matter what is thrown at us in life – it will all work together for good for the Christian! In short, if you love God, it will all work out for the best.
I read an article a few moments ago about a Christian family down South. They were called and told their daughter was missing. After going to her home, a frantic search that lasted for days into weeks…their son-in-law confessed to killing their daughter. They described making trips to the now empty house to clean out their daughter’s belongings. Hauntingly, they simply said, “We wanted the girl, not the stuff.”
They also said they held on to Romans 8:28. How do you do that? Christians are asked by God to have a tremendously strong faith sometimes. How many of us have a 3 x 5 card on the refrigerator or a beautiful, serene picture hanging with this Verse to add daily comfort to our lives as we pass by it. Indeed, it is comforting. Yet, all the refrigerator postcards and beautiful pictures aside, the disturbing reality is that Romans 8:28 really does apply to every situation…
That’s really sad. We can never know what we, as Christians, will be called upon to endure. We can know, by faith, though, that whatever happens will work out for our ultimate good, if we love God, and are called to do His will. That is sometimes the only comfort we really have.
